At the beginning of this course, my memo focused primarily on how manufacturing planning and control improves production efficiency, inventory management, and customer service. While those points are still important, I would write the memo much differently now because I have a better understanding of how manufacturing planning fits into the broader supply chain.The biggest change would be placing greater emphasis on supply chain integration instead of only manufacturing operations. I now understand that manufacturing planning is closely connected to demand forecasting, Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP), Material Requirements Planning (MRP), capacity planning, supplier collaboration, transportation, and inventory management. A production schedule cannot succeed if suppliers cannot provide materials, if capacity is insufficient, or if logistics cannot support customer demand.

Another point I would add is the importance of balancing efficiency with resilience. Early in the course, I focused mainly on reducing costs and inventory. After studying topics such as JIT, channel conflict, capacity planning, and supply disruptions, I now recognize that companies must also prepare for uncertainty. Strategic safety stock, supplier diversification, flexible capacity, and contingency planning are just as important as lean operations.

I also underestimated the importance of capacity planning. I now understand that matching production capacity with forecasted demand helps organizations avoid bottlenecks, excessive overtime, stockouts, and unnecessary inventory. Capacity decisions directly influence purchasing, scheduling, labor planning, and customer service throughout the supply chain.

Finally, I would place much greater emphasis on collaboration. Successful supply chains depend on cross-functional teamwork within the company and strong partnerships with suppliers, distributors, and customers. Manufacturing planning is no longer simply a production function—it is a supply chain strategy that requires accurate data, shared information, and coordinated decision-making across the entire network.

Overall, this course changed my perspective from viewing manufacturing planning as an internal operational activity to understanding it as a critical process that connects forecasting, production, suppliers, logistics, inventory, and customer satisfaction. That broader perspective would make my original memo more complete and more valuable to management.

Looking back at my Week 1 memo, I would write it differently now because I have a better understanding of how each supply planning activity connects to the overall supply chain. My original memo correctly emphasized forecasting, MRP, inventory control, capacity planning, and production scheduling, but it treated these areas more as separate tools than as an integrated planning system. I would now explain more clearly how inaccurate demand forecasts can affect the master production schedule, create incorrect MRP requirements, increase inventory, and place unnecessary pressure on production capacity. I would also place more emphasis on Sales and Operations Planning because it helps align demand, production, inventory, finance, and supplier capabilities before operational decisions are made.

One key point I missed was the importance of balancing inventory levels, lead times, and service levels instead of simply trying to reduce inventory. Safety stock, reorder points, EOQ, and cycle service levels showed that inventory decisions should be based on demand variability and the level of customer service the company wants to maintain. I also would have discussed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the MPS because frequent or poorly controlled schedule changes can create material shortages, excess orders, overtime, and supplier disruptions. Aggregate planning was another area I would now include because companies must match labor, equipment, and production capacity with expected demand before detailed production schedules are developed.

I would still recommend investing in a supply chain planning and control system, but my recommendation would now be more specific. The implementation should connect forecasting, S&OP, aggregate planning, MPS, MRP, inventory management, capacity planning, and supplier coordination rather than introducing each function independently. Performance measures should also include forecast error, inventory turnover, stockouts, schedule adherence, capacity utilization, lead time, and on-time delivery. Overall, the biggest lesson I missed in Week 1 was that strong supply planning depends on accurate information and coordination across the entire supply chain, not just better internal production planning.
