DESIGNING A NURSING INFORMATICS PROJECT FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION
You will use project management tools and strategies to propose how you would support and potentially implement a nursing informatics project. While you may not have the opportunity to implement this proposed project, this project will allow you to apply the skills needed and the considerations that are required in deducing how a project of this scope might take place in your nursing practice. To complete this project, you will define an informatics project that would be beneficial to your healthcare organization or nursing practice. You can discuss this with upper leadership, in your practice or organization, explaining that you will need to design, a proposed informatics project.
TO PREPARE
- Continue working with a manager, or consider how you will work with a manager, to design a proposed informatics project for your organization.
Continue working on the Scope, Charter, and SWOT Analysis, as assigned thus far. You will add Gap, WBS, Project Timeline in the coming weeks (six tools; 8–9 pages including application and rationale for tools) to be submitted in Week 6.
CONDUCT A SWOT ANALYSIS.
- Project Design: Conduct a SWOT analysis which will provide information for the Scope and Charter. You can use a Word document and insert a table. Directions can be viewed in the video, How to Perform a SWOT Analysis. Some of the content is relevant to both the project for this course as well as organization for your DNP Project or dissertation. Overall, the first step for any project, work, or your DNP Project/dissertation requires a plan: what you will and will not do. That information is defined in a project scope and charter.
You are not required to submit this assignment this week, however, it will be helpful to incorporate Instructor feedback before the Final Project submission in Week 6.

SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Understanding how to perform a SWOT analysis is critical to your planning process. The purpose of creating one is to formulate a synthesized view of your current state. We build on our strengths, shore up our weaknesses, invest in our opportunities, and monitor our threats. Strengths and weaknesses provide an internal view of your organization, while opportunities and threats offer an external view. Utilizing input from your planning team and pulling in data sources will help you develop a SWOT analysis. Internal data sources include: ● Executives and board members ● Employees ● Customers ● KPIs External data sources include: ● Megatrends ● Industry ● Market ● Competitors After collecting your data, synthesize it into 10 to 15 bullet points for each four quadrants of your SWOT. Aim to fit it onto one page. It’s helpful to be able to see a clear and succinct picture of your current state. Do not confuse weaknesses and opportunities. For example, say one of your bullet points is to improve communication. While it may sound like an opportunity, it should be classified as a weakness. Opportunities are drawn from external perspectives (things we can influence but not control). We control communication. The distinction is important because when you process your SWOT, each quadrant serves its purpose. Opportunities are growth goals, threats are simply monitored, weaknesses are operational and people goals, and strengths are the source of competitive advantages.
