Research studies have the ability to create change and move healthcare forward. New insights garner new ideas, and new ideas create a space in which patients may receive better care.

Not surprisingly, as a profession, healthcare professionals rely heavily on the use of research to guide practice. Moreover, DNP-prepared nurses are uniquely prepared, through training and education, to lead the way for the use of research to impact change. As a future DNP-prepared nurse, how do you see yourself using research in your area of practice?

This week, you will examine the use of nonparametric methods in research studies. You will explore the use of research for your area of practice and analyze studies in your area of interest. You will also consider and recommend changes to study designs and methodologies to improve the data analyzed as you continue working on your Article Critique Assignment.

How are research methods used in nursing? What particular methods are used in your area of nursing practice? Over the last few weeks, you have been exploring these questions, and you will continue this exploration examining the specific tests and methods that may be used in your particular area of nursing practice. Why might different methods be used based on an area of practice? Why is it important for DNP-prepared nurses to be familiar with various research methods?

For this Discussion, reflect on the tests and methods utilized in research studies, presented over the last eight weeks of the course, to consider the approach, impact, and purpose of these in conducting nursing research. Using a selected article, consider the approach used and reflect on how that approach might fits within your area of nursing practice.

In nursing research, various research methods are used to investigate phenomena, inform evidence-based practice, and improve patient care outcomes. These methods encompass both quantitative and qualitative approaches, each serving different purposes and offering unique insights.

 

In my area of nursing practice, which focuses on psychiatric mental health nursing, a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods is often utilized. Quantitative methods, such as surveys, experimental designs, and statistical analyses, are commonly used to examine the effectiveness of interventions, assess patient outcomes, and explore associations between variables. For example, researchers may use quantitative methods to measure the impact of different therapeutic interventions on reducing symptoms of depression or anxiety among psychiatric patients.

 

On the other hand, qualitative methods, such as interviews, focus groups, and ethnographic studies, are valuable for exploring the lived experiences, perceptions, and attitudes of individuals with mental health disorders, as well as the interactions between patients and healthcare providers. Qualitative research in psychiatric nursing can provide rich, contextualized data that deepen our understanding of patients’ subjective experiences, treatment preferences, and barriers to care.

 

The choice of research methods in psychiatric nursing is influenced by the complexity of mental health conditions, the diverse needs of patients, and the multidimensional nature of psychiatric care. Given the holistic approach to mental health nursing, which considers biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors, both quantitative and qualitative methods are necessary to capture the breadth and depth of phenomena within this specialty.

 

For this discussion, I have selected the article titled “Current and Future Health Care Professionals’ Attitudes Toward and Knowledge of Statistics: How Confidence Influences Learning” by Baghi and Kornides (2013). This article explores the attitudes and knowledge of health care professionals, including nurses, toward statistics. While the article primarily focuses on quantitative data analysis and statistical tests, its findings are relevant to psychiatric nursing practice, as understanding statistics and research methods is essential for evidence-based decision-making and critical appraisal of research in mental health care.

 

In conclusion, familiarity with various research methods, including both quantitative and qualitative approaches, is crucial for DNP-prepared nurses in psychiatric mental health practice. However, the data in this study may not meet these assumptions, as attitudes and knowledge of statistics are likely to be influenced by a variety of factors and may not conform to a normal distribution. For example, attitudes toward statistics may vary widely among healthcare professionals, with some individuals expressing strong positive attitudes and others expressing negative attitudes.

 

Strengths of the research study include its focus on an important topic relevant to healthcare professionals and its use of nonparametric tests to analyze differences in attitudes and knowledge of statistics. Additionally, the study utilizes a large sample size, which enhances the generalizability of the findings. However, weaknesses include potential biases in self-reported attitudes and the use of a cross-sectional design, which limits the ability to establish causality or temporal relationships.

 

The findings of the research study have important implications for evidence-based practice in nursing.
