### Journal Entry 3: Reflecting on Practicum Experience

#### Introduction

In this journal entry, I will reflect on my practicum experience, connecting it with my previous professional experience and the competencies and concepts learned throughout the program. My focus will be on synthesizing the literature and applying it to my practicum setting. The reflections will encompass the practical application of evidence-based practices, challenges faced, and the impact of these experiences on my professional development.

#### Reflection on Practicum Experience

**Integration of Previous Experience**

Throughout my career as a nurse practitioner, I have consistently encountered situations that require evidence-based decision-making. The practicum provided an opportunity to apply these skills in a new setting, enhancing my ability to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application. For instance, in handling complex patient cases, I utilized evidence-based guidelines from Dang et al. (2021) to inform treatment plans, which was instrumental in achieving positive patient outcomes.

**Application of Competencies and Concepts**

One of the primary competencies I focused on during the practicum was the ability to appraise and synthesize evidence. According to Dang et al. (2021), effective evidence appraisal involves critically evaluating research quality and relevance. This competency was crucial when I reviewed recent studies to inform clinical decisions and develop treatment protocols. For example, in managing chronic disease, I applied the principles of evidence synthesis discussed by Wakefield (2015) to ensure that our practice adhered to the latest guidelines and standards.

**Challenges and Solutions**

A significant challenge during the practicum was managing the integration of new evidence into existing practice protocols. The process required not only understanding the evidence but also persuading colleagues to adopt new practices. This experience aligns with the findings of Kearney (2015), who emphasizes the importance of synthesizing literature to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice. To address this challenge, I employed strategies from the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model, which facilitated incremental changes and allowed for continuous evaluation and adjustment of practices.

**Impact on Professional Development**

The practicum experience has profoundly impacted my professional development. It has enhanced my ability to critically evaluate evidence, communicate findings effectively, and implement changes in practice. This experience has also underscored the importance of ongoing education and staying current with emerging research, as outlined in the readings by Dang et al. (2021) and Wakefield (2015).

#### Connection to Literature

The integration of evidence-based practice into clinical settings is a recurring theme in the literature. According to Dang et al. (2021), evidence appraisal is fundamental to improving patient outcomes and ensuring that interventions are grounded in the best available research. Similarly, Wakefield (2015) highlights the importance of literature synthesis in developing comprehensive and effective care strategies. These principles guided my approach during the practicum and reinforced the value of evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.

#### Conclusion

In summary, the practicum experience has provided valuable insights into the practical application of evidence-based practices. By reflecting on my previous experience and integrating new knowledge from the program, I have enhanced my competencies in evidence appraisal, synthesis, and implementation. The challenges faced during the practicum, along with the strategies employed to overcome them, have contributed significantly to my professional growth. Moving forward, I will continue to apply these lessons to ensure that my practice remains aligned with the latest evidence and best practices.
