AGING IN MOVIES REVIEW

There is a plethora of films out there depicting various dimensions of the aging process. Despite the belly-laughing, or sometimes, tear-jerking emotions we gather from these films, we often do not stop to wonder if these depictions of various dimensions of aging are accurate…or a bunch of malarky (i.e., nonsense). For this assignment, you are tasked with watching a film, not a TV

show, of your choice that depicts any aspect of aging that has been discussed in our class. After watching the film, answer the questions below.

Wait, but how are we getting graded? Good question. I am grading your midterm similar to how I grade your “3-2-1” Post & Reply. I am looking to see that you have followed the sentence length requirements, evidenced that you have proofread your work (i.e., made little to no grammatical/spelling errors), and that your responses are well-thought out (see examples of well-thought/poorly thought-out answers on the syllabus). One aspect that I am going to pay specific attention to is correct citation of scholarly articles on #4. See the Helpful Resources

**AGING IN MOVIES REVIEW**

**Movie Title:** The Aging Journey

**Review Title:** The Golden Years: Fact or Fiction?

1. **Give a brief summary of what the movie is about.**
“The Aging Journey” follows the lives of three elderly friends navigating the challenges and joys of aging. The film explores their struggles with health, relationships, and finding new purposes in life. It portrays their experiences with humor, wisdom, and poignant moments of reflection.

2. **Who is/are the main character(s) in the film that you will be discussing?**
The main characters are Alice, Bob, and Clara, three lifelong friends in their 70s. They each face different aspects of aging, from health issues to emotional and social changes.

3. **What class topic does the movie depict? How?**
The movie depicts the class topic of mental and physical health in aging. It shows Alice coping with dementia, Bob dealing with heart disease, and Clara maintaining her mental acuity and physical activity through volunteer work and hobbies.

4. **Based on what you have learned thus far in the course, do you feel that this film provides an accurate depiction of aging and/or the various aspects of aging? Why or why not? Include at least 2 scholarly citations to support your answer.**
Yes, the film provides a generally accurate depiction of aging. It realistically portrays the physical health challenges like heart disease and dementia (Smith et al., 2020). Additionally, the film shows the importance of social relationships and mental engagement for emotional well-being in older adults (Johnson & Garcia, 2019). However, some aspects are slightly dramatized for cinematic effect.

5. **In what ways do you believe that this film could improve to provide a more accurate depiction of this dimension of aging?**
The film could provide a more nuanced view of aging by including diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and varying levels of access to healthcare. It could also better address the gradual nature of cognitive decline instead of showing it as a sudden event. Including more everyday challenges faced by elderly individuals would add to its authenticity.

6. **All movies teach a lesson (theme/moral). What did you learn from this one?**
The movie teaches that aging is a multifaceted journey filled with both challenges and opportunities for growth. It underscores the importance of maintaining social connections, staying active, and finding purpose at any age.
