The Topic 1 Resource, “The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education,” represents the core competencies of professional nursing education and provides a framework that nursing programs use to prepare professional nurses. The RN-BSN program at Grand Canyon University meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using both direct and indirect care experiences for practicing nurses. In your practicum course, you will complete these hours with a preceptor and work to develop a change project.

Which of the 10 domains in the The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education” are you interested in learning more about and why? Based on the readings in the Class and Topic 1 Resources, what are some characteristics of successful students and what strategies can you implement to be a successful student? Identify a role model or mentor who would be able to support your professional growth.

Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two references cited using APA format. Responses to peers or faculty should be 100-150 words and include one reference. Refer to “RN-BSN Discussion Question Rubric” and “RN-BSN Participation Rubric,” located in Class Resources, to understand the expectations for initial discussion question posts and participation posts, respectively.

The Topic 1 Resource The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education

One domain from “The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education” that I am particularly interested in learning more about is Domain 8: Professionalism. Professionalism encompasses a wide range of attributes and behaviors that are essential for nurses to uphold in their practice. This domain covers areas such as ethical practice, accountability, advocacy, and commitment to lifelong learning. As a nursing student, developing a strong sense of professionalism is crucial for my future success as a nurse. By understanding and embodying the principles outlined in this domain, I can enhance my ability to provide high-quality care, advocate for patients, and contribute positively to the nursing profession.

According to the readings, successful nursing students often exhibit characteristics such as dedication, adaptability, critical thinking, and effective communication skills. They are proactive in seeking out learning opportunities, actively engage in their education, and demonstrate a commitment to their personal and professional growth. To be a successful student, I can implement strategies such as setting clear goals, staying organized, actively participating in class discussions and activities, seeking feedback from instructors and peers, and continuously reflecting on my experiences to identify areas for improvement.

In terms of finding a role model or mentor to support my professional growth, I would seek out a nurse who exemplifies the qualities of professionalism and embodies the values of nursing practice. This mentor could be a nurse leader, educator, or experienced clinician who is willing to share their knowledge, provide guidance, and serve as a positive role model. By learning from their experiences and observing their behaviors, I can gain valuable insights into what it means to be a professional nurse and how to navigate the challenges and opportunities within the healthcare environment.
