There are many approaches that one can take in developing a treatment plan. The approach described herein represents a continuation of the same process that began with the clinical assessment and case formulation approaches described in the previous chapters. According to Melchert (2015), the biopsychosocial approach is based on a “holistic understanding the patients’ needs that recognizes the full range of interactive psychological, sociocultural, and biological influences on development, functioning, and behavior change”.

For this discussion, you will watch the application video below and observe the clinician’s interaction with the patient. Using a minimum of 200 words respond to the following.  Refer to Ch. 5 to support your response and use the APA format. (YOU MUST POST FIRST TO VIEW OTHER POSTS.)

1) From the observation of the video, the therapist appeared to develop a collaborative and mutually acceptable environment for the client. She engaged in active listening, maintained good eye contact, and demonstrated empathy and validation toward the client’s experiences and emotions. The therapist also encouraged the client to share her thoughts and feelings openly, fostering a sense of trust and rapport between them. Overall, the therapist’s approach seemed flexible and client-centered, rather than rigid.

2) The therapist included sufficient details to guide action and outcomes for the client. She discussed specific goals and objectives tailored to the client’s needs and circumstances, such as securing housing, improving self-esteem, and reestablishing visitation with her daughter. Additionally, the therapist collaboratively developed strategies and interventions with the client to address these goals, empowering the client to take an active role in her treatment plan.

3) The therapist planned a realistic time frame within the client’s capability. She acknowledged the client’s current challenges and limitations while setting achievable short-term and long-term goals. For example, the therapist recognized that securing housing and reestablishing visitation with her daughter would take time and required incremental steps. By breaking down these goals into manageable tasks, the therapist ensured that the client could progress at a pace that was realistic and sustainable.

4) My overall impression of the treatment planning process in this case is positive. The therapist demonstrated competence in conducting a thorough assessment, collaboratively formulating goals, and developing a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to the client’s needs and preferences. As I continue my studies, I feel confident that I can effectively conduct a treatment plan session that promotes successful outcomes for the client. By applying principles of the biopsychosocial approach, active listening, and client-centered care, I believe I can facilitate a collaborative and empowering therapeutic process that supports clients in achieving their treatment goals.
