HIST10 American Ethnic and Racial Within a Framework Dilemma Essay

When we began our course, I argued that the American ethnic/racial past is best understood within a framework of the “insider/outsider dilemma.” What exactly did I mean and how did HIST 10 ultimately bear this out? In your essay, fully explore one major ethnic/racial development from each of the following periods (1607 – 1789, 1790 – 1900, 1900 – 1980) to demonstrate the usefulness of the insider/outsider dilemma in understanding America’s ethnic/racial past. Your response should touch on the experiences of at least three ethnic/racial groups.
Essay: Be sure to address the questions in the prompt directly in your introduction paragraph. Your essay should set forth a clear argument (thesis) and draw upon evidence from both lectures and the readings (Arrogant Beggar by Anzia Yezierska and A Different Mirror by Ronald Takaki, but also documents about the civil right movement.) A good essay will reference primary sources to support argument.

The Situation

  • History is messy, which is why historians organize it by theme.
  • Theme for this class? INSIDER/OUTSIDER DILEMMA!
  • Why the U.S.? ‘Cause it’s known for being hypocritical (it’ll probably never end)!

Other…?

  • A person or a group of people are viewed as an outsider; in this case they’re the opposite of an “American”
  • Defined by dominant group(s); serves to support superiority
  • Otherization: process by which a group within a dominant society is made into an “other”
  • Assimilation: process by which a group integrates into American life/society

Why study history?

  • Up to interpretation; NOT a set of facts strewn along a timeline
  • Dialogue from the past is mostly a collective project constructed by many
  • It is contested even to this day!
    • meaning of past events are hotly debated ‘cause dominant narratives have serious implications for the present & future
